It is the mission statement of the Sherman Police Department to
serve all people in which we have contact with respect, fairness and
compassion. We are committed to the protection of life and property;
the preservation of peace, order and safety; the enforcement of local,
state and federal laws; and the defense of the Constitution of the State
of Illinois and the Constitution of the United States of America in a
fair and impartial manner.
We are committed to serving our community to enhance the quality
of life and to nurture public trust by holding ourselves to the highest
standard of performance and ethics. Our officers are determined to
serve as a deterrent to crime, develop relationships with community
groups, residential and business organizations and promote an environment
receptive to visitors and residents alike. The Sherman Police Department
has and shall continue to provide service of the highest quality to its
community and to foster community partnerships in crime prevention.
PURPOSE OF THE SHERMAN POLICE DEPARTMENT
The purpose of the Sherman Police Department is "TO PROTECT AND
SERVE" the Village of Sherman. The Department protects the rights of
all persons within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal attack, to
be secure in their possessions and live in peace. The Department serves
the people of Sherman by performing the law enforcement function in a
professional manner and it is to those people the Department is ultimately responsible.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
A society free from crime and disorder remains an unachievable
ideal; nevertheless, consistent with the values of a free society, it
is the primary objective of the Sherman Police Department to as closely
as possible, approach this ideal. In doing so, the Department's role is
to enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing the statutory
and judicial limitations of our police authority and constitutional rights of
all persons. It is not the role of this Department to legislate, to render
legal judgements or to punish.
To demonstrate our commitment to our profession, we subscribe to the
following values:
Integrity
Integrity is defined as being honest, moral, upright and sincere. Public
trust can only exist with our integrity and respect for one another. The
foundation of the Sherman Police Department is the high level of integrity
of its employees.
Commitment to Employees
The Department recognizes that its employees are the vital component to
the successful delivery of police services. We believe we can achieve our
highest potential by actively involving our employees in problem solving and
improving police services. We support an organizational climate of mutual trust
and respect.
Community Partnership
Recognizing the fact that police agencies were established as a result of
society's voluntary limitation of personal freedoms, we encourage and expect the
participation of the community in facilitating solutions to problems of mutual
concern. We therefore solicit and support contributions from all members of this
community regardless of race, sex, creed, national origin or social status.
Community Sensitive Policing
Department members shall uphold laws in an ethical, impartial, courteous,
and professional manner while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons.
We shall strive to achieve a balance between enforcement and community needs
which reflects both the spirit and the letter of the law.
Professionalism
Recognizing the changing and diverse needs of the community, the Sherman
Police Department promotes and encourages a policy of professional and individual
excellence which is delivered and enhanced by continuing education and training.
The Sherman Police Department realizes fully that the expression of ideas is
meaningless unless actively practiced. The integrity and professionalism demanded of
members of the Sherman Police Department shall ensure the proper, lawful, and
unbiased application of police powers.
